Can we talk about this a minute?
Really, this is like where most of people get their knowledge of mental illness. They watch dramatized fiction on television. They later forget exactly what they have seen, but they internalize the lessons that mentally ill people are dangerous. They think they know something about mental illness when it is brought up. What do they know? Nothing.
Reality: There are mentally ill people around you- at school, at work, in the mall, in the grocery store, at a club, at a concert, a kid’s soccer game. You don’t notice the majority of them. You might even know them real well, but you don’t know that about them. Not unless you know the subtle clues to look for. They’re good at hiding their illness.
