COUNSELLING BLOG: How to Deal with Feelings of Insecurity

1. Make a list of all your insecurities. Write down all the areas where you lack confidence. Try to identify the cause of your self-doubts. When did you start to feel like that, and why?

2. Take each item, one by one, and ask yourself whether your feelings of insecurity are justified. Is there any way that you are blowing things out of proportion in your mind? Are you wrongly torturing yourself? Can you think of exceptions – where things turned out OK, despite your expectations and fears?

3. There may be some basis to some of your feelings. In those cases, think about ways of tackling and changing your insecure feelings. What could you do to improve in an area where you lack confidence? For example, perhaps you don’t feel good about the way you look. Check out some magazines, talk to a good friend, and think about getting some kind of makeover – a new haircut, some completely different clothes, etc. There’s almost always something you can do to start improving your self-confidence.

4. Talk to people you really trust – people who accept you and truly care about you. It’s easier to change if you have support, and others understand what you are battling with.

5. Be patient, and start with just one area … then gradually work on the others on the list. Don’t pressurise yourself – it takes time and hard work.

6. Remember - You deserve to be confident and happy – and you only get one shot at having a great life. Don’t let the painful feelings and negative thoughts prevent you from living the life you want to live.
